CBD Oil for Dogs
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance derived from a cannabis or hemp plant. Unlike THC found in marijuana, CBD gives your dog a pain relieving and calm sensation without any intoxicating effects.
The fact that CBD-rich cannabis is non-psychoactive than THC-dominant strains makes it a great option for seeking health and wellness for your pet. It is an appealing option for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria.
Like humans CBD reacts with our pets endocannabinoid system, CBD targets the receptors located in the organs, brain, central nervous system and immune cells that release a relieving effect.

How does it benefit your pet?
With people increasingly seeking treatment for their beloved pets, CBD has shown several astounding benefits for dogs. Products that contain this substance have opened a whole new door to pet care and have rekindled the belief in home remedies.1. Epilepsy and seizure treatment
Pet parents use CBD when their dog suffers from epilepsy and seizures. Pet seizures can be managed through high levels of CBD. It has been known to decrease the frequency of seizures and in some cases treating them completely.2. Chronic Pain/Arthritis Relief
CBD can help in reducing arthritis as well. Arthritis means the inflammation of joints which results in pain, aching and other degenerative illnesses. Being a pain reliever, CBD targets the painful joints and gives relief to your dog. In addition to this, it also reduces the long term inflammation that prevents your pet from healing quickly.

3. Boosting Appetite
It can be hard to know the reason behing a dog's lost appetite. However, most on the time it is due to nausea. In the case of humans, unless we consume something to boost the digestive issue and receive pain relief, we cannot eat. CBD does the same to your pet - boosts the digestive issue and gives relief.

4. Reducing Anxiety
Anxiety is as awful for dogs as it is for humans who suffer from it. Many dogs have been found to be depressed and extremely anxious in several situations, such as when their owner leaves. This usually results in destructive tendencies such as pacing, chewing objects, urinating and more. CBD is a relaxing stimulant that helps to calm your pet.
5. Cancer prevention and removal
Dogs are prone to getting cancer as well which results in symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, and long-lasting pain. CBD provides comfort to your pet during this painful time and helps in reducing the side effects that cancer could cause to your dog. Cancer is prevented and removed by giving small doses of CBD daily which helps in the following ways:
- Boosting the immune system to kill cancer cells
- Blocking the ability of cancer cells to produce energy
- Containing anti-tumor characteristics
A similar range of symptoms like chronic pain, loss of appetite, nausea, change in behavior, etc. causes most of the diseases in dogs. An all-around stimulant like CBD can help your dog relax and reduce pain in times of illness.
Some other diseases that CBD can treat include:
- Autoimmune disease
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Cardiovascular disease
- Neurodegenerative disease
How can CBD be Consumed?
Many pet parents think that cannabis oil is the right treatment for their dog; therefore there are several ways to feed CDB to your canine’s diet. These ways include:
- Cannabis oil
- CBD tincture
- Dog treats
Since the dogs are more prone to eating dog treats, they tend to work better when compared to tincture and oil.
Choosing the Perfect CBD oil for your dog
An article by Dogs Naturally suggests the following ways to choose the right CBD oil for your furry friend.
- “Make sure the product is organic: If it isn’t organic, your CBD oil contains pesticides, fungicides or solvents.”
- “Don’t cheap out: The higher the quality and purity, the higher the cost. Don’t price shop … make sure your CBD oil is free of additives and has a good amount of CBD.”
- “Get the analysis: Ask for a lab analysis of the amount of CBD in the product. Many CBD oils contain only small amounts of CBD. The manufacturer should provide a certificate of analysis. You’ll also want to make sure there is little or no THC in the product.”
- “Buy CBD as a tincture: You can buy CBD in treats but the best form is in a tincture. This way, you can adjust your dog’s dose drop by drop to make sure he gets the most benefit.”

Even though no scientific data shows that there are side effects of CBD usage for dogs, there are side effects of CDB’s effect of humans. Some of these include:
- Decreased Blood pressure: A temporary drop in the blood pressure can be caused when high doses of CBD are consumed. A brief feeling of light headedness can be caused even though the drop is small.
- Dry mouth: According to research, CBD decreases the production of saliva. This leads to an increased thirst levels of dogs.
- Drowsiness: CBD has been used to treat anxiety. But when high doses of CBD are used, the calming effect can also cause drowsiness.
Risks of Using CBD
Any medication or supplement carries the risk of a reaction. It is always advisable, when giving your dog something new, to start out with small amounts and then closely monitor the effects. And always check with your veterinarian first.”
Precautions While Giving CBD
There are some things that you must be careful about when you plan on giving CBD to your pet:
Keeping CBD far AWAY
If a dog finds a stash of CBD or other marijuana product, like other things, it is likely to eat more than it should. A CBD dog biscuit has a high risk of being over consumed by a dog. However, to ensure your pet’s safety you should put the CBD products away from its reach and preferably behind locked doors.
Segregate Regular and CBD treats
Even though CBD does not give your dog a high, the quantity served has to still be checked. You should ensure that CBD treats should not be served in high doses even by accident. Seperate the regular diet from the CBD diet and let people know when is the right time to give CBD to your dog and how much amount must be given.
The dosage of CBD oil
The size of your dog determines the doses of the CBD hemp oil. This is primarily the reason why most of the CBD oil brands provide a wide range of options to choose from. You should have a proper understanding of the dosage appropriate for your dog before you choose to feed it CBD oil or other such products.
